What is Metal 3D Printing?

Metal 3D printing is an additive manufacturing process, which has wide applications and is much popular in various industries. Compare with CNC machining or other traditional technology, it supports to manufacture complex and durable metal parts in a very short time, which also offers more choices for engineers when designing a metal 3D model.
There are kinds of methods used for metal 3D printing, but their production process is roughly the same. Before the production, the engineers need to design a 3D model by CAD and make sure that the design is workable. During the fabrication, the 3D printer would emit laser beams to melt the metal powder and to bind metal particles selectively to form a 3D part and its support, and of course, the support would be removed at last.

The Metal 3D Printing Methods

DMLS, with the full name of direct metal laser sintering, is one of the most commonly used metal 3D printing technology. It applies laser sintering to melt the metal powder and then from 3D parts layer by layer. It is perfect for making parts with holes, depressions and draft angles, and materials such as stainless steel, maraging steel, aluminum AlSi10Mg, cobalt-chromium alloy, Inconel 625 and titanium Ti6Al4V are all workable for this technology.
Selective laser melting (SLM) technology, true to its name, prints metal 3D parts in an inert gas environment to melt metal. And the parameters of metal 3D parts that are made by this technology are close to casting production. It is a technology suitable for manufacturing titanium and aluminum parts. 3D parts made by SLM are much durable, and widely used for gears, propellers and other mechanical parts.
EBM or electron beam melting works roughly the same as the SLM, but the laser is replaced by an electron beam. Compared with other methods, it is more accurate and has a faster production speed. This technology is widely used to make titanium alloy and cobalt parts.

The Advantages of Metal 3D Printing

Excellent Mechanical Properties

Metal 3D printed products have great durability, lighter weight and high performance which can be used for a range of end environments, in addition, it can combine several assembly components into one part, which can significantly improve the strength of the structure.

Various Materials and Shapes

A variety of materials can be used for this technology, and there is less limitation of the shapes of metal parts, many complex geometries can be made by it. Thus, it can definitely improve the design versatility of most projects.

Short Turnaround Time

For metal 3D printing, there is no need to utilize special tools or machines to adjust the shape or other details, which are already designed by computer and most steps involved are automatic. It helps to shorten the total production time.

Lower Cost

There is less material waste during the production of metal 3D printing that is an additive technology, and the metal 3D parts are formed from metal powder layer by layer, which can help to control the material used.

The Application of Metal 3D Printing

Metal 3D printing is a popular manufacturing method that can be used for many applications.
For example, it can be applied to fabricate rapid industrial tooling, especially those components with complex curvatures, thin wall thickness and tiny sizes. It is also perfect for robotics, aerospace, and defense industries, as it can manufacture highly durable and compact metal parts.
Apart from the applications mentioned above, it can also be used in the electronics industry, mechanical industry, medical industry, and so on.
