Are SMT components bad for high voltage applications?

Many assembly factories are asking for SMT jobs, while I think through hole would be a better option for a high voltage application. Before the high voltage project is started, we need to make a call on SMT or Through hole parts. Is there a study on this?

Firstly, check whether your PCB is high voltage. Generally speaking, high voltage is defined as starting at 1000V.

That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong in general with using surface-mount parts in a device running at these voltages, so long as the parts you are using are rated for voltages you are using them at. Keep in mind as well that you do not need to make a single decision between SMT and through-hole parts. You can mix and match both within a single design.

What Others Are Asking

Is there any licensing restrictions of PCB components?

Let’s say I plan on building a consumer electronic system, which would have a PCB and a plethora of various components, such as LEDs, transistors, resistors, etc. I would purchase these from a distributor or perhaps even directly from a manufacturer. Do I also owe royalties or other licensing-based fees for each of these components? What criteria/factors drive this answer?

Why do newer devices lack external antennas?

Technology got better: sensitivity increased, antenna design got better so patch antennas (integrated with PCB or integrated with the case) became not just practical but

Are there any SMD components that can bear 1kV voltage?

In my current design, just for uniformity I wish to keep all the components as SMD. There is one copper line on the PCB which goes up to 1000V (with current in milliamps obviously,) for which I need to attach a resistor and capacitor across it. Are there any SMD components that I can use?
